Berlin - SMP advised early stage investor APEX Ventures on two financing rounds:
In Q2 2020, a team led by SMP partner Martin Schaper advised APEX Digital Health on its investment in the Berlin-based MedTech startup DeepSpin. In addition to the lead investor APEX Digital Health, the existing investors Entrepreneur First, SOSV as well as several renowned business angels participated in the seed round. The company says that it is planning to use the fresh capital to expand its team and to further develop its technology.
Recently, SMP also advised APEX Ventures on the seed financing round of the Berlin-based startup Phantasma Labs. Besides the lead investor APEX Ventures, participants in the financing round included Signals VC, IBB Beteiligungsgesellschaft, Wi Ventures, Entrepreneur First and several renowned business angels. According to Phantasma Labs, the company is planning to use the fresh capital for team expansion and product development.
"We are very pleased to have advised APEX Ventures on these two financing rounds. The investments in such DeepTech and MedTech companies demonstrate the increasing importance of these sectors within the VC market", says Martin Schaper.

As with the first fund generation, which has already made 16 successful investments, the focus is on deeptech companies with protectable intellectual property in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. However, investments in other European countries, the US and Israel are also planned. Since the fund was registered in January 2020, four investments have been made in the fields of pathology, radiology and neurology.
Based on artificial intelligence, MedTech startup DeepSpin headquartered in Berlin is developing a next-gen magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. Compared to conventional systems, the DeepSpin solution will be a fraction of the cost, size and weight. The company's goal is to make MRI accessible to all patients globally and thus establish a new standard in MRI. The company was founded in 2020 by Clemens Tepel and Pedro Silva.
